Karnataka: Congress set to return to power?

Image Source The much-expected general elections to the Karnataka Assembly slated on Wednesday 10 May is just two days ahead while the possible outcome continues to remain a much-debated topic on all possible public platforms and social networking sites. A forecast of a majority of 17 pre-poll surveys, by and large, favours the Congress party returning to power. The electoral history of the state ever since 1978 has oft registered ousting of the party in power in every election, hinting at the expected results. Anti-incumbency factor remains: Irrespective of the ruling party being national or regional, people...

Karnataka Elections: Ruling BJP, Opposition Congress and Janata Dal-S on get set go mode

With the formal announcement of general elections to the Karnataka state Assembly by the Election Commission of India on Wednesday last, the tables have been cleared for a free for all among all the three major political contenders in the state. These parties include the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), main opposition Indian National Congress (INC) and the fence sitter, power hungry, king maker turned king regional party Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S). The state will go to polls on a single day on 10th May while the results are slated to be known on 13th May. Preparations from past one year: Maybe, the Election Commission declared the electoral calendar of events on Wednesday, 29th March, but all the formidable rivals have been on a campaigning and preparatory spree since more than a year. The statement holds good to all the major players like the BJP, INC, JD-S. And not to be left behind, the New Delhi based and centered Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is also in the fray making noise every n...

No Anti Incumbency, Claims Former CM and Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda

DV Sadananda Gowda, former chief minister, former Union minister and Bengaluru North Lok Sabha constituency MP is confident about the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), returning to power while pooh-poohing talks about the anti-incumbency factor haunting the present dispensation. In a freewheeling chat, he shared his views about the prospects of his party in the ensuing state Assembly elections. Q: According to some pre-poll surveys the opposition Congress party appears to be having an upper hand. What do you say? DV Sadananda Gowda: No, I don’t think so. Making sound systems will not give the result. Of course, they have got a good gang of Congress leaders who can shout at the BJP, who can create some false narratives against the BJP and who can just find fault at the ruling party, which they have not done for a very long period of time. However, people are very well aware of the activities of the BJP for the past several years and especially after Narendra Modi became the Prime Min...

Gujarat Model Illusions, Myths, and Contradictions

There has been enough systematic and well-orchestrated hype over the much-repeated word Gujarat Model, across the country and more so at the time of any general elections. Just like there are professional big mouths tom-toming the oft-repeated cliche there is no dearth of dissenting voices against the same. But on the ground, it looks like there are no takers for such arguments. Image Source:  Elets News Network Only campaigners or baiters: A tour with journalist friends in the poll-bound industrious state and meeting a variety of people give rise to only two kinds of opinions. Either you hear a vociferous campaign favouring the double engine administration or others baiting both the dispensation. It looks like there is no space for a third or neutral voice. Unimaginable progress over the years: Dr Deepa Nadkarni, a general practitioner based out of Ankleshwar in Bharuch district recollects-“I came to Ankleshwar in 1995 to practice. Then I was carrying my infant kid and the house w...

Gujarat: Congress may increase its tally

The Indian National Congress (INC), which has been continuously sulking election after election for the past 27 years has reasons to smile. This time as the top echelons of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party in power is of the perception that the permanent opposition party is set to wrest more than 10-12 seats than its present strength of 60.                                                                            Image Source: Wikipedia   Congress to go upward: In fact, the Congress had won in 77 seats last time, but thanks to Operation Lotus, 17 of them just walked away into the ruling party for green pastures. Going by the popular mood and pre-poll surveys of many a media outlet and acceptance of none other than the BJP itself, Congress is said to...

Gujarat: Ruling BJP confident of returning for the Seventh consecutive term

Polling is on to 89 out of the total 182 constituencies for the Gujarat state Assembly while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) portrays an exuberant posture of returning back to the reins of power for a record consecutive Seventh tenure. The only change in the situation this time is that the Aam Adami Party (AAP) is also in the fray along with the traditional rivals BJP and Indian National Congress (INC). Image Source: INDIA TV South Gujarat, Saurashtra: South Gujarat comprising a large tract of tribal belt continues to remain a strong BJP bastion. However, the Saurashtra region which suffered a humiliating defeat in 17 constituencies due to the Patidar agitation led by Hardik Patel is headed for a show of strength. Hardik Patel, who had created ripples within the ruling regime during the last general elections has robed with saffron attire and is contesting on a BJP ticket making a turnaround in the electoral scenario. Hardik tipped to become a Minister: Hardik Patel, despite ...

Thanks to exit polls, BJP bashers at the receiving end!

T he outcome of multiple exit polls have proved the Bharatiya Janata Party bashers otherwise as almost all exit poll surveys have projected the return of a National Democratic Alliance(NDA) government at the centre much to the heartburn of Congress and several other parties under multiple banners! image source: indiatoday.in The projection has also come at a time when the situation in the saffron camp, by and large, looked like dull and devoid of any mood to rejoice. Interestingly, if at all most of these surveys were to come true as made public it would go into the annals of history as a landmark verdict as the BJP has never won a second tenure continuously so far. But a notable characteristic which demands mention about the current mandate is the U-turn of many of the pollsters much before the actual polls. Most of the surveys had almost written off the BJP from the main Hindi belt comprising of the cow belt. But the revelations if also realising into reality have al...
