Bengaluru: Harvinder Singh from Moradabad city of Uttar Pradesh has shifted to Palolem Beach in South Goa from New Delhi along with his wife Monica and son. He lived in New Delhi for 15 years working in an administrative position while his wife Monica, an Optometrist, ran a clinic and optician shop before planning to shift from there.
Thanks to lockdown and COVID-19: If the onslaught of COVID-19 devastated any number of lives and families, the same pandemic has turned out to be a game changer for many of them and Monica-Harvinder Singh's family is one such of them. They were fed up with the steep increase in pollution in Delhi and pondering over moving out. Both of them, practically with no prior experience in the hospitality or food business plunged into tasting success in the adventure and are now sailing on the success ship.
Not too cold or too hot: On why they chose Goa for their new venture, Harvinder Singh pointed to the friendly climate of Goa, which is not too cold or too hot. Added to these characteristics, it is also a beautiful and peaceful place. Compared to North Goa, which is more like living in any other metropolitan city, South Goa is more relaxed and enjoyable apart from ample business opportunities. If you approach the Tourism Department here, you will come across several business opportunities, he explained.
From eye clinic, optical business to...: If you take our example, first we had an eye clinic and optical business which we changed after moving here. To start with we started a homestay business, later a resort business and now we are in the food business. Now we are in a cafe, bar and restaurant business. As of now, we are running two restaurants, he recalled.
Good law and order situation: Harvinder Singh also stressed one more vital reason for planning to shift to South Goa and felt elated to describe the good law and order situation by comparing it with the one prevailing in North India. He exclaimed-"The crime rate here is meagre when you compare it with the same in not only North India but any other state. This was also one of the valid reasons taken into consideration because of the overall safety of the family".
Thanks to social media: Narrating his experience with different types of businesses and the earnings, he is happy and optimistic about the present business-"As mentioned earlier initially we were into homestay business gaining some experience and growth. Later we explored the resort business and did well in that also. However, for some reason, we had to close it down and now we are in the food business. It is going well, thanks to social media we are well known here which is also helping us in terms of good business. This aspect is a plus point for us".
All businesses dependent upon tourism: He was also categorical on the volume of business being dependent upon tourism, which can be termed as a boon and setback at times-"Whenever there are enough tourists you get good business and in their absence, it will be dull unlike places like Delhi where it is steady without any ups and downward trend. But, here the business has both ways upward and downward trends as it is dependent upon tourism".
No prior food business experience: When inquired about having any food business experience earlier, he replied in the negative-"We had no food business experience before and whatever we have is only after coming to this place. Earlier our profession was altogether different as I was in an administrative position in the non-medical field while my wife was in the medical field. It became paradoxically different after coming down here and slowly we started learning the new business. We even thought of continuing the clinic and optical business here but it didn't seem like working as the population here is less compared to Delhi. That was the reason for doing alternate business ensuring better success.
