God is Man's greatest invention

'God is Man's greatest invention', is a popular quote by Prof Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar - An Indian-American Nobel laureate astrophysicist in whose honour, the 'Chandra X-ray Observatory' is named. Chandrasekhar determined what is known as the Chandrasekhar limit—that a star having a mass more than 1.44 times that of the Sun does not form a white dwarf but instead continues to collapse, blows off its gaseous envelope in a supernova explosion, and becomes a neutron star.
"God is man's greatest invention." ( ईश्वर मनुष्य की सबसे बड़ी खोज )

Indian-American Physicist, Astrophysicist and Mathematician: According to Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar ( 19 October 1910 – 21 August 1995 ) who was an Indian-American physicist, astrophysicist and mathematician, and awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics- "God is man's greatest invention."

New inventions every day: From the initial stage of human civilization, man is constantly progressing. To make life more and more comfortable, new inventions are being made every day. From the evolution of a simple wheel, today mas has set his footprints in space. From Rail, Aeroplane, Telephone man has entered the era of Rockets, Television, computers and mobile. Electricity and the equipment which run through electricity have become part and partial of our lives. The invention of supercomputers and many other things which are known to everyone have changed the life of a person and made it very comfortable but the greatest invention which man has made so far is “God”.

Man created God for self-interest: The man created God for his self-interest. Man needs safety, security and shelter from such a power which can give him relief from all of his sorrows, fulfil all his ambitions and help him to get whatever he wants without any hard work.

Omnipotent, Immanent God: But do you know when and how God was created? It's a very funny question that God who has been said to create this entire universe, who has been said to be eternal (Anadi, Anant), omnipotent and Immanent (sarvavyapak), who has been said to be free from life and death.

Living in forest caves: I am talking about his creation. But just imagine, at the initial stage man was living in the forest caves, used to hunt animals and eat them, his clothes were of the bark of trees, he did not know any language, and he did not know God. He was afraid of natural calamities like heavy rains, storms, fire cold etc. He tried to hide himself to escape from all these calamities. Slowly the human civilization developed. First, the period of 70,000 to 3300 BC is called the Stone Age. Till that time no language was developed.

Two billion years ago: Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, one of the greatest scholars of Vedas has said that according to Veda the universe started about two billion years ago but according to scientists life in the universe came from sedimentary rocks some 3.8 billion years ago. Whatever may be, the development of human civilization must certainly have taken thousands of years. The knowledge of language still came later.

Ways and means to save himself: In the beginning, to save himself from natural calamities, man must have searched for ways and means. He understood the importance of natural powers like Fire, Rain, Air and Sun and imagined them to be God and Goddess. He prayed to them to make them happy so that he was saved from all these natural calamities. This was a pre-vedic period and a time to imagine them as a divine power. To imagine such a power which could defend him in every manner from all miseries. And they found an invisible power that we can say is a divine power or God.

Man invented Brahma or Ishwar: Afterwards, the then Rishies in their wisdom and thinking observed that in all those powers, one common element is available to whom they called ‘Brahma-. So the man invented the “Brahma” or “Ishwar” word. Man made ishwar “Ishwar”, and gave him a divine form. And probably this is the biggest invention in the history of the world so far. Today man also takes shelter from God to fulfil his ambitions and aspirations and make his life comfortable through various types of offerings, which in bitter words can be said to be bribery. Man serves God with a purpose. He does not serve him unselfishly.

  1. God is perhaps an invention of man but a very good invention. There comes a time when it becomes necessary to find meaning in life. Man needs to relate to the profundity, the great something that the universe is encompassed but doesn't know what and how. This is the beginning of a search from within which leads to the veneration of that something which may be in form or formless. One may call it by any name even if one doesn't believe. In India therefore we had theists and atheists. But none denied the existence of a power beyond one's comprehension.
