The Kannadigas of Andhra Pradesh are literally at a crossroads with step-motherly treatment from the parent state Karnataka and no signs of respite for their pressing demands for decades. Despite not being sure of the future in store they continue to religiously adhere to education in Kannada medium with a fond hope of things changing for the better sooner or later.
Andhra Pradesh State Government providing benefits: Interestingly and unlike other adjoining states like Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala the Andhra Pradesh state government has been magnanimous to the core when it comes to helping the Kannada medium students studying in Andhra Pradesh.
Rs 15,000/- to Mother's accounts: Thanks to the 'Amma Vadilu' project mothers of all students studying from 1st to 10th standard in Andhra Pradesh are paid Rs 15,000/- annum. This amount is directly deposited into the personal bank accounts of the mothers.

Free Uniforms, Fees and learning materials: In addition, all students studying from 1st to 10th standard are also provided free uniforms, fees and study materials like textbooks and notebooks, all for free. For students studying from 8th to 10th standard, the Bijyus organization is also providing Tabs for free.
The government of Karnataka gives nothing: The financial aid, freebies and any number of material benefits extended by the Andhra Pradesh government to the Kannada medium students studying in that state are immense. However, if you were to ponder about the same from the state government of Karnataka, you would end up being upset and disappointed. The first three rank holders of Kannada medium in the 10th standard are felicitated with cash prizes by the Border Area Development Authority. Other than that the administrators and politicians keep assuring 101 things offering lip sympathy. making no sense in reality.
What about the future of Kannada medium students: Elaborating on the above-revealing facts and figures, Kune Balaraj, President of Kannada Teachers Association, Ananthapur district in Andhra Pradesh wonders: But what about the future of students studying in Kannada medium government schools in Andhra Pradesh? Every year around 5,000 students of 10th standard pass out in Andhra Pradesh. There are around 60 Kannada medium government schools in Andhra Pradesh and about 20,000 students in all and all of them are worried about their future.
Your future is okay, but what about our future? Kune Balaraj becomes melancholic to recall instances of the Kannada medium students and their parents quizzing him with a variety of doubts about the future. He laments: My father retired as a Kannada teacher at the Mandal Parishat Kannada Primary School in D Hirehal. Now I am working in the same school which was launched in 1911. The curious kids' and parent's queries about the future make me perplexed not knowing what to tell or how to convince them affirmatively.
Corporate model school: As the D Hirehal school is 112 years old it is being blessed with a series of benefits without any discrimination of language and region from the Andhra Pradesh state government and the corporates. Under the 'Naadu Needu' project classrooms are being built with a cost of Rs 12-15 lakhs. Four fans, TV screen, table, stool and facilities like that are provided on par with any other corporate school.
Two Swamiji, two Liquor tycoons: D Hirehal is also an interesting place for different reasons. Two different swamijis' of the Veerashiva Lingayats belong to this place. Sri Marulasidda Rajadesikendra Shivacharya Bhagwatpadaru of Ujjani Saddharma Peetha and Sri Shivananda Swamy are natives of D Hirehal. HG Ramulu, a liquor tycoon and four times Lok Sabha MP from the Koppal constituency hails from this place. Likewise, the late HR Basavaraj, another liquor tycoon and former Rajya Sabha MP was also from this place.
Two per cent reservation: Kune Balaraj says: Border Kannadigas are demanding only two per cent reservation for higher education and state government jobs. If that is not happening at least the benefits of the Kalyan Karnataka region need to be extended to us.
