Covid-19: It's your life, so take care of yourself, advise Doctors

Probably there is nothing that people haven't discussed, shared and debated about the deadly Coronavirus pandemic ever since the first lockdown 1:0 was imposed across the country from 24 March onwards. However, irrespective of what is being pondered over and exchanged over SMSes, WhatsApp and similar social networking sites and in-person not much seems to have changed at the public behaviour in general!

The same sort of opinion holds good with those in the administration and the political bosses adorning power seats. There seems to be no rationale between what is being publicly perceived and practised at large. Day in and day out the local, regional, state and central governments continue to bombard the people on what all that needs to be done to keep the Coronavirus at bay.

On the contrary, the same authorities continue to act paradoxically giving little credence to their own oft-repeated public pronouncements. Much worse, every public activity, civic, public and business have all been given a free hand to function as usual as if nothing has happened at all!

Several people have multiple reasons, thinking and defence for the alarming turn around of the present consequences. Dr Chandrashekhar V. Shettar, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the KLE’s Centenary Charitable Hospital & MRC, Belagavi in Karnataka opines: Despite all this knowledge of Coronavirus “now the Big Question is why is the Government allowing for routine activities?”...

...First people after almost 2-3 months lockdown are desperate to work and earn, the Daily wagers who live on their weekly or daily earnings are also worried and they know the Government and the philanthropic persons helping the needy can’t feed them forever. It is, at last, they have to earn and live. Living is going to be costlier day by day...

...Now, why is the Government allowing in spite of knowing everything, First the number of tests done is just the tip of the iceberg, so we really don’t know the extent of disease lying uncovered by the negligent and irresponsible citizens who don’t want to tell they have symptoms or have come from the containment zones...

The Government wants to save its face as they don’t have their coffers full. So if the economic activity starts the Government’s coffers will fill & they will be able to meet the state’s expenses. Salary to Government staff, running the Government is not that easy with coffers empty.., he points out. Then, what's the way out to such a predicament? Dr Chandrasekhar V.Shettar asserts: There is what is called “Herd Immunity “. It’s the natural immunity gained by healthy individuals who develop immunity to such viral diseases naturally. But how far they will develop is really a guess and no guarantee to come to a conclusion...

...If you ask me it is like predictIng a toss and gambling. You may click or can’t be predicted. So it’s purely a wait & watch of the outcome of the activities allowed and how much the people are going to tolerate? which is nothing short of a million-dollar puzzle!...

But yet Dr Chandrasekhar V.Shettar has many a suggestion as precautionary measures in order to remain safe and healthy: The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by maintaining a physical distance of at least 1 metre from others and frequently cleaning your hands. By doing this you eliminate viruses that may be on your hands and avoid infection that could occur by then touching your eyes, mouth, and nose...

...There are currently no drugs licensed for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19, so Avoid going to crowded places. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. Stay home and self-isolate even with minor symptoms such as cough, headache, mild fever, until you recover...

...Keep yourself updated about Covid19 from reliable sources like WHO. Young children below 1 year and those above 60 years should take more care especially those suffering from Diabetes, or any other diseases..., he proposes.

How to keep safe distances, he makes the following suggestions:

1. Think and behave like everyone has Corona & you will be safe. This has to be followed until the medicines are found or a vaccine is produced.

2. Moderna, a Massachusetts-based company, said the vaccine called mRNA-1273 “was generally safe and well-tolerated.” The company said it plans to move ahead with the next two phases, in which larger numbers of people will be tested this year.

3. Do cashless transactions.

4. Meet the Doctor and take his advice at the slightest indication like fever, dry cough, breathing problems, headaches, loose motions, vomiting etc

5. Avoid close contact with anyone while dealing with anything.

6. Avoid unnecessary travelling.

7. Try to carry your own things when you go out like sanitizer, pens, cups etc. Avoid touching rails, carry your sanitizer wipes. On returning home, remove shoes, dress, have a good wash, wear clothes fresh ones & then mingle among family members

But he is equally candid to conclude: So ultimately there are no shortcuts on the rocky path. You need to be cautious and nothing else can protect you. Be careful with Yourself and Others as well. No one is immortal. So in order to remain and continue to be healthy, be Alert and save Yourself. The Government can Only Advise, it can’t be after you to ensure your safe being. It’s “Your Life, So take care of it Yourself".

In spite of repeated calls and SMSes Dr CN Manjunath, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru as well as Head, Covid-19 taskforce of Government of Karnataka and Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman and Founder of Narayan Health didn't take the calls nor responded to the messages over their cell phones to record their opinions on the crisis.

Basavaraj Kadkol, a Bengaluru based passionate architect known for his artistic bent of mind in all his projects has his take on the situation as a fallout of the current Coronavirus consequences: If I have to say anything about Covid-19 influence at a human level, I think it has clearly redefined the definition of happiness. You can be happy and be contented with whatever you have. Expectations only make you unhappy, a situation as now has made all of us introspect to understand living in your present achievable as a measure of true happiness...

...And on the other side, it has taught you to take care of others, because you really do not know who is going to give you Corona!!!, he jocularly signs off!

Sri Veereshwar Punyashrama: A unique gurukul

Sri Veereshwar Punyashrama: A unique gurukul institution with multiple contributions to the society Sri Veereshwar Punyashrama of Gadag district in the state of Karnataka is a household name in most of the regions belonging to North Karnataka and adjoining areas of neighboring states as well. The contributions of this revered religious and cultural institution to the society and humankind are endless and the list continues to keep on increasing till date. Although the founders and pontiffs of this Math happen to be Veerashiva-Lingayats that aspect just happens to be by coincidence considering the ground reality of people belonging to all faiths irrespective of their caste and religion being imparted with education. Interestingly 2018 happens to be a cherished year in the annals of the institutions as it has multiple feats to rejoice this year. It just celebrated a few milestones some time back. They include: 74 th  death anniversary of Ganayogi Shivayogi Panchakshara G...
