BS Yediyurappa outgoing president and Chief Minister handed over the mantle by transferring the party flag and wishing him a fruitful tenure. He also felicitated the new president with a gorgeous silk shawl, traditional garland and a memento.
No doubt it was a joyous occasion and celebration for the new president as he had restricted himself as a leader of the coastal belt of South Canara and Udupi districts so far by his fiery and equally controversial speeches. However, it's altogether sweet and sour feeling for the average party workers' who continue to remain the backbone of the party.
17 new ministers were sworn in only a week back but for some of them, it wasn't any important function to attend. R Ashoka, Revenue Minister and former Deputy Chief Minister preferred to stay away from the ceremony. He's been reportedly upset for not being made the Deputy Chief Minister once again and annoyed for making Dr Ashwath Narayan CN, Malleshwaram MLA as one of the three new Deputy chief ministers.
B Sriramulu, Health and Family Welfare Minister and leader of the Valmiki community also didn't attend the function. He's tipped to be a Deputy Chief Minister. His supporters are soar for not making him another Deputy Chief Minister. They registered their protest by burning tyres at Kanakgiri in Koppal district and Ballari. They burnt effigies of BL Santosh, national organising General Secretary and Amith Shah, Union Home Minister and raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) leaders.
Jagadish Shettar, Large and Medium scale Minister came to the meeting and congratulated the new president. The next minute he requested to be excused for having an urgent meeting to attend and left the venue.
Even KS Eshwarappa, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister walked out of the stage when Nalin Kumar Kateel began his maiden speech after taking over as the new state party president.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, perturbed by the developments within the rank and file of the legislature party cancelled the scheduled interaction with the media soon after the function. Nalin Kumar Kateel was deputed to the neighbouring Kerala state on the eve of Lok Sabha polls to strengthen the base of the saffron party in the hotbed of CPI(M) and Congress. In fact, he proved his mettle as the party's vote share increased considerably though it failed to manage any win in the coastal state. According to his own admission: My elevation from a humble party worker to the stage of the state party president is quite significant and also an eyeopener to everyone else as to how an ordinary worker can rise to top positions...
He's right in his assertion and playing to the gallery will also enable you to make equally popular while in the opposition party and much unlikely as a ruling party president! In that way, his challenges are innumerable than anticipated and whether he fits into the new position, only time has to tell.
