Karnataka BJP loses a shrewd strategist in the untimely demise of HN Ananthkumar
In the untimely demise of HN Ananthkumar,Union Parliamentary Affairs,Fertilizers and Chemicals Minister, the state and the Bharatiya Janata Party in particular apart from the nation at large have suffered a severe loss in realistic sense.Perhaps the biggest jolt is to the state unit of the BJP.
As rightly pointed out by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, HN Ananthkumar was a great asset and a 'tragic loss' as described by President Ram Nath Kovind. No doubt he proved to be a shrewd strategist boasting of mass contact at the grassroots level.
He was only 59 years old when he breathed his last at the Shankar Cancer Hospital in the wee hours today. His wife Tejaswini and daughters Aishwarya and Vijeta were at the bedside when the end came in.In fact he was admitted to the Cancer hospital since more than a month back.
He had initial treatment in the United States and later in United Kingdom after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. But it looked the chances of improvement had started dwindling in spite of regular check up and treatment as an inpatient.
The interesting aspect and unfortunate fact about Ananthkumar's life is that he plunged into public life at an early age and thanks to his organizational and oratory skills,he also climbed the ladder of success in the same fashion.
Born to HN Narayan Shastri and Girija Shastri in Hubballi,a commercial city of Dharwad district he owes his public service career to his late mother.Girija Shastri was a popular corporator and Deputy Mayor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation having waged a battle against imposition of Emergency.
As a student of Kadasiddeshwara Arts College,he made a entry into public life through Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat(ABVP),student wing of the BJP.His pace of accomplishments were steady and fast and thanks to his association with the student body he gave a fillip to state tours during those times itself.
His services to the ABVP were recognized in no time and thanks to his fluency in Hindi he rose to become the national General Secretary of the organization. Then onward there was no looking back as several party positions started making a bee line to him.
He soon became the chief of state youth BJP and later rose to become the state president and national General Secretary as well. These hallmarks also helped him to become the youngest Member of Parliament from Bengaluru Lok Sabha constituency successively for six times and the youngest minister in late Atal Bihari Vajpaye led National Democratic Alliance government.
Probably it goes to his credit of retaining the Bengaluru Lok Sabha constituency with the BJP since 1996 and being in the cabinet whenever the NDA has assumed office. But irrespective of being in power or not he was in touch with the party and ABVP cadres from across the state.
However he appeared to have fallen out of grace after the Narendra Modi led government came to power during 2014.A protege of LK Advani, the party patriarch he was pushed to the 13th position during the swearing in ceremony while a relatively new entrant DV Sadanandagowda of the state was elevated to the third rank and divested with the all important Railways ministry.
Although many other senior leaders were drifted to the background during the current dispensation HN Ananthkumar although received an initial setback to begin with had to be roped in to the forefront within a short time.
Thanks to his long stint in the lower house and his parliamentary skill sets of reaching out to people of various feathers and added with a robust experience of being a minister to several departments,he was elevated to become the Parliamentary Affairs Minister.
And thanks to his shrewd and strategic way of handling things in Parliamentary business he established himself as the right choice for the new role.Though the ruling party had no majority in the upper house HN Ananthkumar ensured that such a piquant situation is no hurdle to pass the prestigious GST bill in Rajya Sabha.

Even Ananthkumar also underwent imprisonment for about 40 days during the collapse period of democracy. It is said in party circles that his detention during the period in Ballari jail gave him an opportunity to become close with tall leaders like AB Vajapeye and LK Advani. Both the leaders were also housed there.
